A business card is a snapshot of who we are and what we stand for. The way it looks and the way it is handled reflects not only who we are, but also our business. So a well-designed and well-presented business card is important. It is therefore not surprising that there is a so-called business card etiquette that everyone who wants to make a professional impression should be aware of.
When looks matter
The design of your business card depends a lot on what you do. But what all business cards have in common is that less is more. It should be tasteful, easy to read and of good quality. Also, make sure your business cards are not dirty or wrinkled. It's best to keep them in a business card holder. Take good care of them, never scatter them carelessly anywhere.
Keep them with you at all times!
You never know when or where you'll run into someone you want to impress in a business context, so always have a business card with you if you can.
When do you give it to someone?
This is where we separate business meetings/meetings from everyday situations. According to business card etiquette, it is best to exchange business cards at the beginning of the meeting. If you are lower in rank than the other party, younger, female, you should hand over your card first. If you get one from someone, it's polite to reciprocate.
The design of your business card depends a lot on what you do. But what all business cards have in common is that they are business cards, not flyers!
When you receive it
If offered, do not refuse, it may be offensive. Once you've received the card, don't immediately pocket it, take a longer look at it, and if you compliment its appearance, you may even score some good points. Never throw anyone's business card in a public bin in front of anyone. If you don't want their business card, wait until you get home and get rid of it there.
